How to Reach Out

You don't have to be a professional to save a life. Knowing the warning signs, asking directly, and connecting a Veteran to help are the most important things you can do.

Warning Signs

โš ๏ธ Crisis Signs โ€” Act Now

  • Talking about wanting to die or kill themselves
  • Looking for ways to access lethal means (firearms, medications)
  • Talking about being a burden to others
  • Giving away prized possessions unexpectedly
  • Saying goodbye as if they won't see you again
  • Sudden calmness after a period of depression
  • Expressing feelings of having no reason to live
  • Talking about feeling trapped, hopeless, or in unbearable pain

If you see these signs: call 988 (Press 1) or take to an emergency room immediately.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Needs Attention โ€” Reach Out

  • Withdrawal from friends, family, and activities they used to enjoy
  • Increased alcohol or substance use
  • Changes in sleep โ€” too much or too little
  • Expressing hopelessness about the future
  • Reckless behavior or increased risk-taking
  • Extreme mood swings or rage
  • Talking about feeling like a failure or worthless
  • Loss of interest in work, relationships, or purpose

If you see these signs: reach out, ask directly, and listen without judgment.

How to Have the Conversation

1
Reach Out โ€” Just Do ItDon't wait for the "right moment." Pick up the phone, knock on the door, send a text. The fact that you're reaching out matters more than what you say. "Hey, I've been thinking about you" is enough to start.
2
Ask Directly About SuicideResearch shows asking directly does not plant the idea โ€” it opens the door. Ask: "Are you thinking about suicide?" Be direct. Be calm.
3
Listen Without JudgmentLet them talk. Don't rush to fix it or minimize their pain. Instead: "I hear you. Thank you for telling me. I'm here."
4
Remove Access to Lethal MeansGently ask about temporarily securing firearms and medications. "Would you be willing to store your firearms somewhere else for now?" This single step can prevent suicide. See firearm safety guide โ†’
